You cannot punish the baby for the sins of the father

Winchester, VA – In this Celestial Musings, the BBC is reporting on a tragic story out of India regarding a 10 year old pregnant victim of rape. The young girl is 32 weeks pregnant—7 months—and Indian courts have denied the family’s requests for the girl to receive an abortion, claiming that the abortion is “too risky” for the girl and that the baby is “doing well.” The girl does not even know she is pregnant, and has been told that she has a stone in her stomach causing the bulge. While the baby is due in September, doctors will take the baby via C-Section before then if any complications develop. Although I feel terribly for what has happened to the young girl, I am glad the court saw fit to defend the life of the baby. You cannot punish the baby for the sins of the father. There is no reason in such cases that the pregnancy cannot proceed until probable viability, and then both mother and child will be protected. I do hope that in consideration of the physical immaturity of the mother, that they do take the baby just a little early. Those last few weeks can be brutal on a full-grown woman, much less a little girl.
