Mandeville, LA – Holy Week Blunt Truth: If “The West” Dies, Christendom Does Not Follow Her To The Grave – Leave it to Joseph Pearce to kick off Holy Week with the Truth on our perpetual moaning about the “death of The West” and the human armageddon it will instigate. When viewed with eyes not drunk on Fox News, soft core porn (broadcast TV) and the latest worship of “gay pride” on Bravo et al, “the West” is on life support because Westerners are now in nearly complete denial of the source of “the West’s” beauty: The Permanent Things. “The secular fundamentalist “West” is decaying because it is decadent, and it is dying because it has embraced the culture of death. What will be left when the secularist “West” is dead will be the Permanent Things. Christianity is alive and well, and thriving and growing, in Africa, Asia, China–and yes, even in resurrected embryonic form in Europe and other parts of the “West.” Europe and the “West” might be committing collective suicide, but Christendom is always new, as it is always old, because it is the Permanent Thing.” [emphasis mine-M.C.] Let’s take the annual, solemn observance of Holy Week as a starting place to defend that Permanency!

Buchanan: The War Party Is About To Claim The Hide of President Trump – “Yay, Iraq War Planners!” – Buchanan not only asks this piece’s title question but then provides that if the answer is yes, Trump will lose a significant part of the base that elected him. So into the stewing carnage of American foreign policy excess we have added the element of inexperience and machismo, some of us prayed that Trump had demonstrated enough disgust at our nation building efforts that he would at the least proceed with caution. Apparently, we got hosed or as Ross Douthat puts it“If you were expecting Trump to actually govern as a paleoconservative, to eschew the use of force absent some immediate threat to the American homeland, to pull U.S. troops out of all their far-flung bases and leave entangling alliances behind, then the strikes against Bashar al-Assad are the latest evidence that you got played.” Played, hosed, had, conned, it’s what our democratic process and civil religion yields.

  1. Do not agree with the position that the airline is not ethical. While it would be nice if the airlines behaved ethically they are not required to do so and the people that use their service enter the contract voluntarily. I suspect that given a choice people that use the service would rather be subjected to airline policies than pay a higher price; leaving aside the argument of what is a just wage and profit. Rather than criticized the airline I have not used the airline since it was no loner pleasurable to fly. Flying is not a constitutional right.

    1. Fred, I never said or say that flying is a constitutional right because it surely is not. As fare as the ethics are concerned, we should view the problem of selling items you don’t have as not only unethical but deceitful. In Christianity EVERY ethical act applies the 4 Cardinal Virtues in an ordered manner. How are the airlines applying Prudence, Temperance, Justice and Fortitude in selling seats on flights that they don’t have?

      1. True except for the part of being deceitful. It is stated in their terms and conditions that they have the right to remove people. By this practice they are able to keep prices lower enabling people that otherwise could not afford to fly the ability to fly. This helps poorer people the ability for instance to be able to get to a funeral. (Cardinal Virtues?).When I was flying they usually asked for volunteers to get off with the offer of a free ticket. Do not know if this is still the practice. but sometimes even a free ticket was not enough of an inducement. I am no fan of the airlines and do agree than many of their practices are probably not ethical but I am referring to a larger point that when we go into voluntary contracts we get what we desire. The best way to stop unethical behavior is to stop doing business with unethical people and freely associate with people we do consider ethical. Flying is not a right. Maybe there could be an ethical airline formed but I doubt it. The trap is that we do not what to give up all that has evolved in a modern society but expect ethical behavior from people that are a product of that society. Like most large industries they are regulated to the point of being forced to behave unethically and are happy to participate in the fraud. The better question is if they were not regulated would they behave ethically. History has shown that they probably would not.
